Do LLP members and company secretaries need to verify?

Stop keeping this deadline in your head
Watch my deadlines freeLLP members must verify their identity with Companies House. The rules treat them as the equivalent of a director. A company secretary does not need to verify for that role. On 1 June 2026 Companies House took the line that mentioned secretaries off its list.
LLP members
Companies House's guidance lists "the equivalent of a director" among the people who must verify, and says this includes members. For a limited liability partnership (LLP), that means every individual member, designated or not.
The rules work the same way as they do for a company's directors. A member verifies once, gets a personal code, and the code is given for each LLP they belong to. For an existing member, that happens with the LLP's next confirmation statement. A new member gives the code as part of their appointment.
People with significant control of an LLP verify too, on the separate PSC timetable. See when a PSC's identity verification deadline falls.
If you run a dormant LLP, this still applies. Nothing about dormancy removes it.
Company secretaries
Being a company secretary does not, on its own, mean you have to verify. The role is not on Companies House's list of people who must.
Until 1 June 2026, that list included "someone who files for a company", with a company secretary as the example. Companies House took that line out on 1 June 2026. It now says it will bring in verification for people who file at Companies House at a later date. So a secretary who files for the company may be asked to verify when that part starts. It has not started yet.
If you are a secretary and also a director or a PSC of the same company, you still need to verify for that other role.
Corporate directors and members
Some directors and LLP members are not people but other companies. Companies House has said it will bring in identity verification later for:
- corporate directors of companies
- corporate members of LLPs
- officers of corporate PSCs
It has not yet given dates for these. Until it does, a corporate director or corporate member has nothing to do. Any individual directors or members alongside it still do.
You can see who on a company or LLP still needs to verify, and by when, with our free director ID verification checker. It leaves out secretaries and corporate officers, because neither has anything to do for that role yet.
DormantFile reads each director's, member's and PSC's status from the register every day, shows it on the Directors tab (the Members tab for an LLP), and emails you before each outstanding person's date, including on the free watchdog plan.
