What is a filing receipt?

By DormantFile · Updated 31 March 2026

A filing receipt is a confirmation record generated when a company filing — such as dormant accounts or a CT600 — is accepted by Companies House or HMRC. It serves as proof that the filing was submitted and accepted for a specific accounting period.

What it contains

A typical filing receipt includes:

  • Company name and company registration number (CRN) — identifying which company the filing relates to
  • Filing type — whether it was dormant accounts (Companies House) or a CT600 (HMRC)
  • Accounting period — the start and end dates covered by the filing
  • Submission reference — a unique identifier assigned to the submission
  • IRmark — a digital fingerprint of the document content, used by HMRC and Companies House to verify the filing has not been altered
  • Acceptance date — when the filing authority confirmed it was accepted

Why you might need one

Most of the time, filing receipts sit in a folder and are never looked at again. But they become important when:

  • HMRC sends a penalty notice claiming a CT600 was not filed — the receipt with its submission reference and IRmark is your evidence that it was
  • A co-director or shareholder wants confirmation that company obligations are being met
  • An accountant, solicitor, or mortgage broker asks for proof the company is compliant
  • You are selling or transferring the company and the buyer wants to verify the filing history

It is always easier to save a receipt at the time of filing than to reconstruct proof months later.

Filing receipts in DormantFile

DormantFile generates a receipt for every accepted filing. Each receipt can be printed or copied to clipboard directly from the filing detail page. Receipts are stored permanently against the filing record, so you can retrieve them at any time.
